It wasn’t the prettiest of games, even by preseason standards, at the United Center on Saturday, and the Blackhawks fell 3-2 to the Blue Jackets.
The Hawks trotted out most of their top players and dominated the game in terms of shots on goal 54-21, but couldn’t translate those opportunities into goals. Joonas Korpisalo had quite the night in net with 52 saves for the Blue Jackets.
Jean-Francois Berube got his chance to audition for the Hawks’ backup job, but allowed a few goals he might like to have back. In the first period, Ryan Murray took control of a failed clear from Alex DeBrincat and put the puck on Berube. It squirted by Berube for the Blue Jackets’ first goal of the night at 11 minutes, 51 seconds.
The Hawks got on the board at 16:50 when Artem Anisimov took a feed from Patrick Sharp near the Blue Jackets blue line and skated in alone to beat Korpisalo at 16:50. The Blue Jackets added to their lead in the second period when Lukas Sedlak and Oliver Bjorkstrand scored 28 seconds apart.
Jonathan Toews made it 3-2 late on a power play by scoring at 18:39 of the third.
After three preseason games it seems as though Anton Forsberg has the inside track on the Hawks’ backup goaltender job after he saved 38 shots on Tuesday against the Blue Jackets.
Toews made his preseason debut after missing the previous game against the Red Wings because of an illness. He skated on a line with Brandon Saad and Richard Panik, as he has all training camp.
DeBrincat, Nick Schmaltz and Patrick Kane played together for the second consecutive game while Sharp, Artem Anisimov and John Hayden were on the third line. Center Tanner Kero and wingers Tomas Jurco and Alexandre Fortin rounded out the fourth line.
On defense, Duncan Keith skated with Jan Rutta, Brent Seabrook with Michal Kempny and Gustav Forsling with Ville Pokka.
