Tavares, Bailey named to NHL All-Star team

Islanders forwards John Tavares and Josh Bailey have been named to the NHL All-Star Game's Metropolitan Division team, the club announced Wednesday.

The 27-year-old Tavares will make be playing in his fourth consecutive All-Star game and fifth overall. Tavares has found the back of the net 22 times and leads the Islanders with 51 points in 43 games this season, the sixth-highest total n the league. A free agent at the conclusion of the season, the Islanders' captain is on pace to eclipse his personal bests of 38 goals and 86 points, both established during the 2014-15 campaign. 

Bailey will be making his first NHL All-Star appearance in the midst of the finest season of his 10-year career. The 28-year-old is second in the league with 38 assists and has amassed 50 points in 42 games, just six away from matching his career high of 56 set last year. The club's first-round pick in 2008 is just the second Islander other thanTavares to be selected for the event since the Isles' captain entered the league in 2009-10. Goalie Jaroslav Halak was selected along with Tavares for the 2015 contest.

The All-Star Game format consists of 11 players selected from each division to play a four-team, single-elimination tournament, with each game consisting of two 10-minute halves played 3-on-3. The division that wins the Skills Competition the previous night will have the option of who their first opponent in the tournament will be and whether they play in the first or second semifinal game.

The 63rd NHL All-Star Game takes place at Amelie Arena in Tampa, Florida on January 28.
