NHL Expansion Draft 2017: Devils lose Jon Merrill to Las Vegas

The Devils lost defenseman Jon Merrill to the Las Vegas Golden Knights during Wednesday's NHL Expansion Draft.

Merrill was one of 30 players the Golden Knights selected on Wednesday -- one from each NHL team. Las Vegas had to submit their list of 30 players to the NHL by 10 a.m. on Wednesday, 72 hours after the league revealed lists of protected and exposed players for each team.

Las Vegas completed several deals with other NHL teams to dictate who they took in the Expansion Draft, but the Devils were not involved in any of those deals. They will not send any further assets to the Golden Knights with Merrill.

Merrill was a second-round pick by the Devils in the 2010 NHL Draft, going 38th overall. He made his NHL debut in 2013 and played in 216 games over four seasons with the Devils, recording 36 points.

The Devils could still make a deal with Las Vegas after 8 a.m. on Thursday, if the Devils agreed to send assets to the Golden Knights for a player they selected from another team.
