The Predators injected their defense with a heavy dose of physicality Saturday, acquiring Alexei Emelin from the Vegas Golden Knights for a 2019 third-round pick.

Emelin, selected by the Golden Knights from the Montreal Canadiens in the June 21 expansion draft, is a big-hitting defensive defenseman who craves contact. He has one year left on his four-year, $16.4 million contract. TSN reported Saturday that Vegas will retain roughly $1.2 million of the remaining salary.

The 31-year-old veteran of 380 games isn't dynamic, but he is a solid addition to a group that heavily relies on its skill. Nashville has eight defensemen under contract for next season, and that surplus may be used in a trade if the Predators seek to further retool their roster.

Defenseman Ryan Ellis underwent knee surgery this offseason, but the Predators expect him to be ready for training camp in September.
