Ole Miss Notebook: Big night pushes Wilkins over 1K

STARKVILLE – Jordan Wilkins made good on his promise.

The Ole Miss senior running back missed his junior season because of an administrative error due to his progress toward a degree. During that year away he told people he’d break 1,000 yards as a senior.

He needed 99 rushing yards against a Mississippi State defense ranked No. 25 against the run. He finished with 110 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.

“The W is most important. That’s the big thing, but the 1,000-yards is definitely a plus,” Wilkins said. “Last year, during the year I was off, I was telling people, ‘I’m going to run for a thousand. I’m working my tail off.’”

Wilkins finishes the season with 1,011 and nine rushing touchdowns. He becomes just the seventh Ole Miss player to rush for more than 1,000 yards, the first since Dexter McCluster in 2009.

Wunderlich sets record

Senior kicker Gary Wunderlich hit a 33-yard field goal in the second quarter for a 10-0 Ole Miss lead.

That was the 64th career field goal for the Memphis native, passing Jonathan Nichols for the Ole Miss record.

The kick also made Wunderlich the career scoring leader. He finished the night with seven points.

For his career Wunderlich ranks first in points with 350, first in field goals made with 64 and first in PATs with 158.

It was a quick one, as most Ole Miss drives are, but the Rebels’ two-play, 44-yard drive was capped by a 46-yard Wilkins run after Jordan Ta’amu had lost 2 yards on first down. That answered an MSU touchdown when the Bulldogs had cut the deficit to 24-13 with 9 minutes, 16 seconds left.

Key Number: 7.9

Wilkins averaged 7.9 yards per carry. He went into the game averaging 6.39 yards per carry, second in the SEC and No. 17 in the country.

Ole Miss concludes the season at 6-6.

“Of course, of course. I didn’t practice all week, and I was ready to get back out there in the groove of things.” – Ole Miss wide receiver A.J. Brown on whether playing in his hometown of Starkville was added motivation.
